Starting online migration to encrypt a volume

Last published : Jun 19, 2026
The Server perspective of the InfoScale Operations Manager is used to initiate the online migration of an unencrypted volume to an encrypted one.
To start online migration
  1. In the Management Server console, go to the Server perspective and expand Manage in the left pane.
  2. Perform one of the following actions:
    • Expand Uncategorized Hosts or an Organization, expand the host, and expandVolumes. Right-click the unencrypted volume that you want to encrypt and select** Encrypt Volume**>Start.
    • Select the host and locate the unencrypted volume under it that you want to encrypt. Right-click the volume and select Encrypt Volume>Start.
The Start Encryption wizard appears.
  1. On the Volume Attributes panel, specify the following details:
Target layout:
  • (Default) To use the same layout as the source volume, select the Same as Source option.
  • To use a different layout, select the required option and specify any related details like Mirror Info or Stripe Info, if applicable.
Disk selection method:
  • Automatic : Indicates that all the disks across which the volume spans are to be encrypted. This option is selected by default.
  • Manual : Select this option if you want to select a subset of the disks to be encrypted.
  1. Click Next.
  2. On the Start Encryption - Summary panel, verify all the specifications that you have provided for the volume encryption. If you need to make any changes to the specifications on the previous panels, you can click Previous; otherwise click** Finish** to proceed.
The Start phase runs as a background process. In the volumes list, the Encrypted column displays the status as In Progress.
This operation invokes the vxassist migrate command with the -o start option and the relevant parameters based on your selections on the previous wizard panels.
  1. On the Start Encryption - Result panel, verify the status of the operation and click OK to close the wizard.
When the process completes successfully, a new plex is added to the top-level volume. The newly added plex has a layered volume underneath, which in turn contains the same number of plexes as the top-level volume. In the volumes list, the Encrypted column displays the status as Commit Pending.
If the operation fails, an error message is displayed; accordingly take the appropriate action.
